Would you play me hawk sonatas
And make my heart swoon outright
With a hill full of nostalgias…?

If I could cease to be Earth’s satellite…
Would you wrench me closer with gravity
To be larger, brighter by your campsite
On the mountain before my next journey…?

If my aim were Moon by starlight…
Would you howl me a lunar tune
That sings of my light-year spaceflight
Drifting through Milky Way’s lagoon…?

If I came as the Moon tonight…
Would you play me eagle concerti
On the hill awash in moonlight
Enchanted by tonal fantasy…?

If my name were Moon tonight…
Would you propose to me with wolf symphonies
And hear my soul croon forthright
Across old memories and new destinies…?

And what if your vows prove false in time?
And, what if I’m left to weep.
Is the rose less sweet in its crimson prime,
That its beauty cannot keep?

Yet tonight the moon is full,
And the heart is richer that chances pain
Than the heart in cotton wool.

The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節), also known as the Moon Festival, Chinese Lantern Festival, Mooncake Festival or Zhongqiu Festival, is a popular lunar harvest festival celebrated by Chinese and Vietnamese people on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar, close to the autumnal equinox. The Government of the People’s Republic of China listed the festival as an “intangible cultural heritage” in 2006, and it was made a Chinese public holiday in 2008. It is also a public holiday in Taiwan.

A mooncake (月餅) is a Chinese bakery product traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節). The tenet of the festival is about moon appreciation, lunar worship and moon watching, during which mooncakes are regarded as an indispensable delicacy or dessert. Mooncakes are offered between friends or on family gatherings while celebrating the festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the four most important Chinese festivals.

    I enjoy the way this blends the light of different source with the moon as the receiver, the saucer almost, of all of the activity that is moving through this poem. I also appreciate the musical accompaniments you’ve offered.

      Regarding your favourite line, SoundEagle supposes that perhaps you also sensed that the word “aim” can have a double meaning there.

      Apart from the obvious rhymes or rhyming schemes, SoundEagle wonders whether anybody notice or detect other defining features and/or consistent devices in this poem.

    There dwells no English teacher in me and I never write critiques of the poetry of others. The feeling from your poem is of the powerful and mysterious female energy of the full moon in wilderness – the sensual lunar pull on bird and beast and the human heart. It recalls a magical moment when I worked as a fire lookout in northern British Columbia. The moon was full and i couldn’t sleep. I heard scuffling outside of the cabin and saw through the window the silhouettes of two wolves playing together much as we see domestic dogs play fighting in the park. Then they stopped and sat completely still against the huge white disk of the moon – breath-taking…

    This poetry reminds me of a story I am following closely. It is the story of the journey of an Oregon born wild wolf, the humans call “OR-7” . . . he has been on the move and has crossed the border into California, making him the 1st known wolf to be migrating there in decades. Many of the U.S. wolves are being lost to hunters and trappers, including collared wolves who are being baited away from protected wildlife areas, then killed. There is both a joy in that these magnificent beings continue to survive and a deep sadness in that the human species is wiping them out by the hundreds at every turn. Your poetry connects me to both emotions. Connections abound.

      Many people often mistakenly believe that the word “conservation” automatically implies “environmentally friendly”. Unfortunately, the images and ideals associated with those quoted words often conceal the more sinister and unpalatable aspects of market environmentalism, in which the word “conservation” really refers to managing wildlife populations, often involving culling any animal that certain interests groups want to be managed or even exterminated. The deplorable situation can become entrenched and perpetuated through ignorance, fear, power, greed, propaganda, and resource exploitation. As a result, state and federal authorities frequently fail to holistically adopt and recognise the best practices in environmental sustainability aimed at improving ecological wellbeing, especially when some politicians enact laws or when certain administrations pass regulations that are suited to the short-sighted interests of their wealthy supporters, eager stakeholders and targeted constituencies.

    To me (and I may be wrong) this is a very romantic poem. Whenever I look at the moon I feel it is full of mystery and I want to ask so many questions – questions to which I know that I’ll receive no answers, but still it mesmerises me and keeps me hypnotised under its spell.     Hello SoundEagle – thanks for dropping by my blog with a link to this wonderful post full of moon-relating poems and images. I may well use some of them for my series.
    I have indeed been fascinated by the moon for the last 14 months and can’t believe I kind of took it forgranted up until that point. It is almost full at the moment and we had a great view of it on the way from town today, as it was just sitting behind one of the tall church spires. Quite a magnificent sight.

      Endeavouring to reply to you before March begins! Did you witness with your naked eye or telescope the very rare Super Blood Wolf Moon 🌕 that appeared just five days before you composed your more recent comment here?

      It is delightful that you recognized the potential of this moon-inspired poem to be a serenade. Perhaps there is someone to whom you could recite it, and for whom you could set it to music, should you also happen to be a musician or composer who wish to treat the poem as lyrics for a homorhythmic arrangement.

      What is your totem animal, Melas, if you have one?

      SoundEagle🦅 wonders whether you have ever witnessed or experienced the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節), also called the Moon Festival or Chinese Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival. As you can see from the many videos and photos, there is a wide variety of Mooncakes 月餅 to be savoured during the festival. One may indeed ponders how, in a truly polytheistic world, Selene (the goddess of the moon) and Artemis (the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, the Moon and chastity) would fare with, or adapt to, the Chinese festival, and vice versa.

        Pardon the late reply, my friend. The past few days have been too busy for me. I have not seen the Super Blood Moon, alas, nor heard of one lately. Perhaps I am have been too wrapped up amid daily events. It must be beautiful to behold. As for your poem, I am not a musician, but I have a good ear and I like to try turning verse into songs sometimes (as the ancient Greeks did). Yours is certainly worth setting to music somehow, even without a particular training.
        The idea and practice of totemism bear some relation to polytheism, some judging it to be a further development to animism. Let that be as it may, I have not thought of a totem animal before and because I like too many, I find it difficult to choose one in particular. Among others, I know that I love cats, eagles, lions and horses.
        I thank you for informing me of these Chinese festivals that I had not been aware of. The lantern celebration is one I hope to enjoy if I were to visit China; the mooncakes look pretty also. Polytheism celebrates Nature in general, in many ways according to various lands and peoples, and yet there is always something to be found in common. There may be one “moon”, but it has many names and characters and interpretations. May the Greeks always admire their Selene, and the Chinese their 月亮. Meantime, may the abusive term “lunacy” be banished accordingly!

    Lovely poem and videos. And beautiful photos of the Full Moon. Interesting about the Moon Festivals too. I spent some time in Greece and they had a Full Moon Festival in August at the Acropolis and other ancient sites in Athens with music and cultural events. I never got to go to one though! Not yet. But do love events centred around the Moon as it’s very enchanting. 🙂
