❄ ❅ ❆ Snowflakes, Tell Me Why You Are…

Koch snowflake

❄ Snowflakes ❆❅❆❅❆❅

Tell me why you are so white
Made of clear ice yet fairer than
Pearl . . . . . .

Tell me why you are all unique
Such that no two are the same
Crystal . . . . . .

Tell me why you are so delightful
As to be courted in Julie Andrews’ favourite things
Convivial . . . . . .

Tell me why you are six-sided
Rivaling the radial symmetry of radiant stars
Hexagonal . . . . . .

Tell me why you are so beautiful
Blazing with the sparkling perfection of gemstones
Inspirational . . . . . .

Tell me why you are modelled
By the self-similitude of recursive patterns
Infinitely fractal . . . . . .

Tell me why you are so frosty
Like an antidote to global warming
Nature’s supercool marvel . . . . . .

Tell me why you are windswept
Snow deposited on Earth’s summits to melt
As spring waterfall spectacle . . . . . .

Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others. Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind.

― Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley (1925)

The Science of Snowflakes

“Snowflakes are symmetrical but they are not perfect. They are ordered but they are created in disorder. Every random branch retells their history, that singular journey that they took to get here. And most of all, they are fleeting and temporary. Even if sometimes they don’t look so unique on the outside, if we look within, we can see that they are truly unique after all.”

  3. Wow, what a great celebration of the miracle of the snowflake. People are like snowflakes. As they fall through life, they are changed and shaped by events and the prism of their own inner strength. People can look the same from a distance, but the closer you get, the more you realize that each one is unique, even identical twins.

    • What a lovely analogy you have shared with us here! Brenda, your comment really reveals to SoundEagle a significant (degree of) perceptiveness towards other human beings, and the various shaping forces that sculpt our journeys and experiences through life.

      • Hi Brenda, it is delightful to know that you “have a few more facets” to reflect and radiate more of the radiant light of kind wisdom outwards from within you —- a multifaceted Brenda is born henceforth!

  11. Although the subject of the poem is snowflakes, I feel as if it is more than this. For me it feels as if you are addressing something/someone who’s beauty/wonder fascinates you and so you question the many facets of the thing of beauty and how it affects you and how you receive it. The poem is filled with awe and appreciation and yet a sense of never ever really being able to own it – it has an ephemeral quality, much like the snowflake.

Hello Marie! SoundEagle is delighted by your perceptive reading of ❄ ❅ ❆ Snowflakes, Tell Me Why You Are…, and by your insightful comment on the meta-narrative potentials and the underlying symbolic imports of the poem. As a result, SoundEagle has been spurred to improve the styling of the poem and this post further. As you can see here, even this very comment is under the influence of the styling. Thank you for your feedback.

By the way, did you have a chance to notice any unusual rhyming scheme(s) as well as the syllabic, rhythmic and numeric patterns in this poem?

      Yours sincerely,
