🦅 SoundEagle in Earth Day 🌍🌎🌏

🌍 Earth 🌎 Day 🌏‍

In pondering existential matters and metaphysical issues, we should sometimes attempt to enlarge our purviews and extend our awareness, resolution and compassion to (include) other lifeforms and the environment, so that we can be cogent, holistic and consilient on the universal, global and even planetary perspectives. After all, we are connected in various ways not just to humans but also to other beings and aspects of the Earth and Mother Nature.

Today is Earth Day! Over one billion people in 192 countries are participating…

In Copenhagen, Denmark—as well as in six other cities on five continents—the Danish Cultural Institute is organizing its annual CO 2 Green Drive Project in honor of Earth Day. Runners, walkers, bikers, and skaters are using their cities as canvasses to spell “CO 2“ with GPS devices.

In Argentina, volunteers from the Surfrider Foundation are cleaning up the local beaches and planting evergreens and Tamarisk shrubs to help prevent wind and water erosion.

5,000 miles to the northeast, in Ghana, The Rural Education and Development Programme (REDEP) is hosting a three-part event that includes a community clean-up, a “Face of Climate Change” theatre production, and an environmentally-themed essay contest.

Earth Day Anthem

Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment
Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world

Earth Day Quotes
°✿° 🌍ܓ🌎ܓ🌏ܓ°✿°
This planet is not terra firma.
It is a delicate flower and it must be cared for.
It’s lonely.
It’s small.
It’s isolated, and there is no resupply.
And we are mistreating it.

― Scott Carpenter, astronaut

Speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee.

― Biblical proverb

It is only when we are aware of the earth and of the earth as poetry that we truly live.

― Henry Beston, 1935, Herbs and the Earth

Touch the earth, love the earth, honour the earth, her plains, her valleys, her hills, and her seas; rest your spirit in her solitary places.

― Henry Beston

I conjure you, my brethren, to remain faithful to earth, and do not believe those who speak unto you of superterrestrial hopes! Poisoners they are, whether they know it or not.

― Friedrich Nietzsche

Remain true to the earth.

― Friedrich Nietzsche

I thought how utterly we have forsaken the Earth, in the sense of excluding it from our thoughts. There are but few who consider its physical hugeness, its rough enormity. It is still a disparate monstrosity, full of solitudes, barrens, wilds. It still dwarfs, terrifies, crushes. The rivers still roar, the mountains still crash, the winds still shatter. Man is an affair of cities. His gardens, orchards and fields are mere scrapings. Somehow, however, he has managed to shut out the face of the giant from his windows. But the giant is there, nevertheless.

― Wallace Stevens, Letters, p. 73

The earth is not a mere fragment of dead history, stratum upon stratum like the leaves of a book, to be studied by geologists and antiquaries chiefly, but living poetry like the leaves of a tree, which precede flowers and fruit — not a fossil earth, but a living earth; compared with whose great central life all animal and vegetable life is merely parasitic.

― Henry David Thoreau, Walden

Earth teach me to forget myself
as melted snow forgets its life.
Earth teach me resignation
as the leaves which die in the fall.
Earth teach me courage
as the tree which stands all alone.
Earth teach me regeneration
as the seed which rises in the spring.

― William Alexander, A Father’s Book, 1997

Talk of mysteries! Think of our life in Nature — daily to be shown matter, to come in contact with it — rocks, trees, wind on our cheeks. The solid earth!

― Henry David Thoreau

Go where he will, the wise man is at home,
His hearth the earth, his hall the azure dome.

― Ralph W Emerson

The earth is the very quintessence of the human condition.

― Hannah Arendt

It was not until we saw the picture of the earth, from the moon, that we realized how small and how helpless this planet is — something that we must hold in our arms and care for.

― Margaret Mead

As we begin to comprehend that the earth itself is a kind of manned spaceship hurtling through the infinity of space — it will seem increasingly absurd that we have not better organized the life of the human family.

― Hubert H Humphrey

Smile O voluptuous coolbreathed earth!
Earth of the slumbering and liquid trees!
Earth of departed sunset!
Earth of the mountains misty-top!
Earth of the vitreous pour of the full moon just tinged with blue!
Earth of shine and dark mottling the tide of the river!
Earth of the limpid gray of clouds brighter and clearer for my sake!
Far-swooping elbowed earth!
Rich apple-blossomed earth!
Smile, for your lover comes!

― Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass, 1855, I Celebrate Myself, Line 439

God owns heaven, but He craves the earth.

― Anne Sexton

Gardening is not a rational act. What matters is the immersion of the hands in the earth, that ancient ceremony of which the Pope kissing the tarmac is merely a pallid vestigial remnant.

― Margaret Attwood

I am interested in the way that we look at a given landscape and take possession of it in our blood and brain. None of us lives apart from the land entirely; such an isolation is unimaginable. If we are to realize and maintain our humanity, we must come to a moral comprehension of earth and air as it is perceived in the long turn of seasons and of years.

― Navarre Scott Momaday

To see the earth as we now see it, small and beautiful in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see ourselves as riders on the earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the unending night — brothers who see now they are truly brothers.

― Archibald MacLeish

The word humility (also human) is derived from the Latin humus, meaning “the soil”. Perhaps this is not simply because it entails stooping and returning to earthly origins, but also because, as we are rooted in this earth of everyday life, we find in it all the vitality and fertility unnoticed by people who merely tramp on across the surface, drawn by distant landscapes.

― Piero Ferrucci, Inevitable Grace

God does not die on that day when we cease to believe in a personal deity, but we die when our lives cease to be illuminated by the steady radiance, renewed daily, of a wonder, the source of which is beyond all reasoning. … When the sense of the earth unites with the sense of one’s body, one becomes earth of the earth, a plant among plants, an animal born from the soil and fertilizing it. In this union, the body is confirmed in its pantheism.

― Dag Hammarskjold

I pledge devotion to the earth, our one and only home, and to the life this earth sustains; one nation, one spirit indivisible, with freedom and fulfillment for all.

― Bruce Hagen, New Pledge of Allegiance, 1983

Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there ― on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.

― Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994

    • Hi Melanie, thank you for visiting. How have you been? SoundEagle has been very occupied lately, and really pines for more time to be present in the blogosphere. Finally, SoundEagle figured that Earth Day is important enough to warrant a specially prepared, albeit belated, post to be published here amidst multitasking various seemingly endless chores and duties.

Have you had a chance to try the puzzle and watch the videos, Melanie?

    • Hello to Elke and Neil! You are welcome and thank you for your comment. We all owe much to Earth for providing us with a habitable home in a largely inhospitable space out there. Thus, the Earth Day is a very fitting celebration.

    • Hello TechFlax! Your question could be interpreted in several ways. For example, SoundEagle could reply to your question with such an answer as “Yes, I made it through without much hassel.” Hence, to pinpoint what your question actually means without ambiguity, the easiest and logical approach is for SoundEagle to request that you kindly clarify what the pronoun “it” stands for. Thank you. 🙂

  15. It is true that we’re all connected, but I believe through God. Most of the problems that we face are caused by humans. Some of them continue to damage our world. It can’t last forever. So, it’s important to do our share for the good. Take care.

  18. Moving quotes re: the earth and our relation to it. Though we have now celebrated Earth Day for half a century, we have not yet taken the obligation to care for the earth to heart. Nor have we learned to care for one another. “The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant” (Isa. 24: 5).

Today was the very first time EVER.. I heard Earth Day mentioned on our News channel.. I do not usually watch the news, my husband does. But I caught half of it this evening as the local news was featuring Nature… I was really surprised it mentioned Earth Day.
