Tell me why you are so white
Made of clear ice yet fairer than
Pearl . . . . . .
Tell me why you are all unique
Such that no two are the same
Crystal . . . . . .
Tell me why you are so delightful
As to be courted in Julie Andrews’ favourite things
Convivial . . . . . .
Tell me why you are six-sided
Rivaling the radial symmetry of radiant stars
Hexagonal . . . . . .
Tell me why you are so beautiful
Blazing with the sparkling perfection of gemstones
Inspirational . . . . . .
Tell me why you are modelled
By the self-similitude of recursive patterns
Infinitely fractal . . . . . .
Tell me why you are so frosty
Like an antidote to global warming
Nature’s supercool marvel . . . . . .
Tell me why you are windswept
Snow deposited on Earth’s summits to melt
As spring waterfall spectacle . . . . . .
Tell me why you are so intent on
Turning the ground into a snowy canvas
Where crocus tints the night sky purple . . . . . .
Tell me why you are often encapsulated
As the shiny glitter falling gently
Through water in the snow globe of some girl . . . . . .
Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others. Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind.

“Snowflakes are symmetrical but they are not perfect. They are ordered but they are created in disorder. Every random branch retells their history, that singular journey that they took to get here. And most of all, they are fleeting and temporary. Even if sometimes they don’t look so unique on the outside, if we look within, we can see that they are truly unique after all.”
— Joe Hanson, science writer, biologist, YouTube educator, and the creator, writer and host of “PBS Digital Studios’ “It’s Okay to Be Smart”
The shapes of snowflakes are highly dependent on temperature and humidity. Simpler shapes are more common at low humidities whereas more complex varieties of crystal are formed at high humidities.

Oh gosh, so many snowflakes to catch before reaching the comment section.
In my humble opinion the snowflake illustrates something of each one of us in the way you so beautifully described.

Hi there! I have to say that I find your blog so frustrating! I’m sorry but it takes so long for things to download that I give up in the end! It’s a real shame as the content is great!

Depending on your Internet connection speed or bandwidth, it can take between 2 to 20 seconds (or longer) to load the rich multimedia contents of this post. Regardless of how long the loading time will be, you should be able to start reading the poem since it is located right below the large banner at the beginning of the post, which can be scrolled vertically even before all of the contents of the post are loaded.

This is another multidisciplinary production from SoundEagle, combining
original poetry and animations with slide shows and Youtube videos covering the photography of snowflakes and accounts of the physical and chemical processes underlying their formation. The illustrations of several stanzas of the poem with animations showing a high level of virtuosity is a particularly impressive feature of this post.
My personal favourite among these is the one illustrating the lines
The large, highly detailed snowflake that is depicted in the centre of this animation does indeed seem to sparkle like a setting of gems as it tumbles. Several other animated illustrations were almost as impressive for me.
Congratulations, SoundEagle, on your peak achievement (so far) in blending poetry, visual art and science!

Your creativity and technical competence amaze me, but I am puzzled: where in Queensland did you find snowflakes?

Surely, you have heard of the expression “The more you can’t have it, the more you want it.” Hence, we are both here having countless snowflakes as eye candies, not to mention their potential role in reducing global warming and heatwave.
As usual, your visit and compliment are much appreciated. Which stanza(s) of the poem do you deem to be your favourite(s)?

Falling snowflakes, whether clumped and awkward or fine and sparkling-dancing, are among my favorite sights, together with falling cherry blossom petals. Thank you very much for the lovely treat, SoundEagle.

Sound Eagle, you’re an amazing mind. I had wondered where you were and now i know you have been lost in a world of beauty and contemplation. Lovely piece here. I too am in awe of snowflakes. Is there anything more magical than a window view of a landscape adorned in a soft marshmallow blanket which can project our spirit into an ethereal wonder of serenity.

Very (n)ice. I’d say more, but I’m snowed under with too much to do and not enough time to do it.
Take care.

Craig, As I was viewing and reading this enchanting post, several things that resemble snowflakes came to mind. Of course, there is the classic, diamond jewelry. Another creation is lace. Using a paper doily, you can sprinkle a powdered sugar pattern on a cake. A kaleidoscope has lovely patterns that somewhat resemble snowflakes. As lovely as all of these may be, they appear quite crude when compared with natural snowflakes. I live in Florida, and though I enjoyed snow when I was young, I now prefer seeing snow on this post. Thanks for sharing the beauty and the wonder! ❤

Hello Cheryl
Much as I would like to be credited with the authorship of this post, unfortunately SoundEagle and I are not the same person. I gather that it has slipped your mind that a similar confusion arose in the Comments section of the post “💨 Strong Wind Knows Tough Grass 🌾 疾風知勁草” in November of last year.
However, I hope that a post for which I can claim some share of responsibility will appear on this site not too far in the future.
Best wishes

Snowflakes provide a Rorschach test look at our inner minds. Isn’t it exciting then to know that each snowflake design represents a particular look at what each person might be thinking at the time.

You seem to have been away for a long time. Welcome back to the blogosphere! Your very first post entitled “NIGHT OF AN OWL” published on your return from an extended absence is very well done, for the poem is at once lovely, reflective and introspective, so much so that SoundEagle🦅 has resonated with the theme of your post by bringing you a wolf, an own and two moons as a friendly gesture of welcoming you.

Our current interaction is so inspiriting and inspiring that it has put SoundEagle🦅 in a highly creative mood to the point of finishing the aforementioned improvements well ahead of time. May you enjoy them thoroughly!
Regarding your questions as to why SoundEagle🦅 has made this post so beautiful, expressive and cool, the answers are already contained in the very poem itself, not the least that a thing possessing such a fine degree of beauty as a snowflake must be exquisitely (re)presented through the innovative juxtaposition of poetry, visual art, animations and science.

Dear Soundeagle,
I want to thank you once again for inspiring me with your information to rather buy a stronger Desktop than a laptop.
And on another note, I now understand why I did not respond to some of your responses anymore:
One first replies to your article and the one who fail to click on the button to be notified of responses will get them,
the other ones won’t.
But even the ones who clicked on the button to be notified may unsubscribe from that specific post after a bunch of other replies came in.
So if you to reply after a while, it actually can happen that I already had unsubscribed from that post (in order no to get all comments from newcomers delivered to my mailbox).
Don’t take this as a pressure to instantly respond – I like the fact that you take your time – I just wanted to explain to you the mechanics of such seemingly inconsistent behaviours.

So many beautiful graphics… Loved your poem.. And a wealth of information here too on the science of snowflakes I looked at a couple of videos.. You put so much effort into each of your posts and your artwork is spectacular..
I wrote my own poem on snowflakes back in 2010…. So I hope you do not mind me sharing that here with you SE…
The Snow Flake
There it came out from the sky
Fluttering softly, gentle as a sigh
First one, then two,
Then a million or too
Each one unique in pattern and form
Together they joined so perfectly
A Blanket so thick, building silently.
Children awoke with glee in their eyes
Gathering up their winter surprise
Adults too went walking afar
To place their feet upon Virgin Stars
Sunlight glistened on crystallised ice
Breath on wind, the feeling was nice
Red rosy cheeks, as icy winds felt
While dogs jumped in air catching balls that did melt.
Imprints of boots with sledges in tow
Trudging up hills, to slide and let go
Magical, glistening, sparkling pure white
A world it transformed, and all overnight.
And it all began with a flake or two
A carpet of white, just waiting for you
Winter wonderland, embrace and partake
In the beautiful gift of a humble Snow Flake..

Happy Winter and Happy December to you and your family!
Thank you very much for sending SoundEagle🦅 “warm hugs to melt the snow” and for submitting your long and lovely poem entitled “The Snow Flake” to this dynamically illustrated and animated post.
SoundEagle🦅 is grateful for your generous compliments and for your fitting inclusion of your delightful poem. Indeed, we are both inveterate lovers of snowflakes.
Therefore, it is especially wonderful, generous and engaging of you to indulge SoundEagle🦅 with your well-written poem exhibiting near-perfect rhyming, for your avian-embodied fellow poet does prefers a poem to rhyme all the way or to rhyme consistently, unless there are compelling or specific reasons not to do so. Hence, your commendable effort in rhyming well is highly appreciated, not to mention the wintery sceneries and homey feelings that you have conjured up through your poetic narratives.
Since SoundEagle🦅 has been composing mainly rhyming poems, often decorated with end rhymes, internal rhymes, alliterations, assonances, consonances, sibilances as well as rhythmic devices, syllabic schemes, musical patterns, and other subtle or overt features, have you detected any special features in the poem ❄ ❅ ❆ Snowflakes, Tell Me Why You Are… as presented here?

Thank you for your generous reply…. I am not what you call a Master Poet… so to me SE so long as its near enough sounding and the words project my meaning I write purely for my own pleasure… So the constructive criticism doesn’t bother me in the least…
I thank you for the effort it must have taken in the response animation and feel honoured for such a reply
My pleasure in sharing the poem I wrote a long while ago…. And Again I thank you for your music… I joined sound cloud simply to reply there to your music post.. I doubt ever to post any of my own musical talents which are nearly none existent.. Except perhaps for a singing voice once trained within a choir…. But I wouldn’t subject any one to that today Lol..
Wishing you a pleasant weekend dear SE…. loved our interactions via our posts recently..
Take care…
